Since 1861, Oakland Cemetery of Denison has been a space for solitude, for remembrance, and for peace.
Now, our cemetery is undergoing a revitalization to better serve our visitors and community.
About the project.
Thanks to a generous gift, the Oakland Cemetery of Denison is undergoing a Master Plan update to guide the care and ongoing maintenance of the cemetery.
Plans for the cemetery are based on reverence for friends and loved ones who have passed, hospitality for those who honor and reflect on the lives of those who have passed, and a spirit of inclusion and welcome for all who lay their loved ones to rest here.
The planning effort is coordinated by Lamp Rynearson and supported by the Oakland Cemetery of Denison Board and the William and Noreen Johnson Family.
With reverence for the cemetery's long history, this master plan will ensure its place in the community for years to come as a special place to find solace, celebrate the lives of those we have lost, and honor those who gave their lives in service to our country.
PROPOSED SITE DESIGN
A - New Grand Entrance
Shifted 25 feet to the north to provide improved visibility from South Main Street, the new main drive entrance directs guests to the gathering plaza, cutting flower gardens, and chapel parking.
B - Columbaria
A safe and respectful resting place for cremated remains, the columbaria is located near the entrance, flower gardens, and parking.
C - Gathering Plaza at Chapel
Greeting visitors with a calm and welcoming place to meet family and friends, the plaza is home to wayfinding, an updated directory, and opportunities to learn about the history of Oakland Cemetery of Denison.
D - Military Memorial
Located at the southeast corner of the cemetery, the military memorial features removable flag poles for flag-raising ceremonies honoring fallen veterans, a memorial section housing plots for veterans and their spouses, and a display of flags representing military branches and the United States of America.
